It all started at a cafe in Manhattan.

My husband pointed out a small painting hung directly above my head at breakfast one morning. It was a still life painting of a plastic bag filled with vibrant oranges. When we got back to Nashville, I knew I wanted to create a whole series around this one painting. Inspiration multiplied.

Thank Anna Roberts for your lovely painting, and your many other intricate contributions to the art world. I bought a bag, a handful of oranges and a small white backdrop.

I set them up near my kitchen window for a natural, sky blue tinted light. I took these images with a Sony camera, but I wish I would’ve shot a few on film. There’s always next time I suppose.

The set up was simple and the photos came quite easily. Daily life can produce beautiful scenes, and I wondered if Anna just happened to have a bag of oranges on her kitchen table the day she sat down to paint. Or perhaps she had this image in her mind and was inspired to put brush to canvas.

Either way – I’m glad we visited that small cafe in Manhattan. These prints were inspired by that day, and I hope they inspire you as well.
